Frequently Asked Questions about Skin Care

Q: What is a facial?

A: A Facial cleans, exfoliates (removes dead skin cells), and nourishes the skin to promote clear, healthy skin. A Facial is one of the most popular spa treatments available! If you have Oily or Combination skin, look for the words “deep cleansing ” or “pore cleansing” in the facial description. If you have Dry or Normal skin, look for the words “hydrating”, “moisturizing”, or/and “antioxidant” in the facial description.

Q: Who provides Facials?

A: Licensed Estheticians (or Facial Specialists) are especially trained in the physiology, structure, and anatomy of the face and skin.  They spend hundreds of hours in hands-on clinical training sessions including the case studies and treatment of real clients with various skin disorders such as rosacea, acne, hyperpigmentation, etc.  Some Estheticians, such as myself, have completed additional training in chemical peels, burns, and post-peel/post laser skin care treatments.

Q: How often should I have a facial?

A: Once per month is recommended as a regimen, to see & maintain desired results. The skin cells take about 28 days to reach the surface, so once per month it is beneficial to deep cleanse and remove impurities from the pores. Your skin care expert (Esthetician or Facial Specialist) can recommend the proper homecare agenda as well as help you maintain your skin’s well-being.

Q: What are the benefits of having regular facials?

A: There are many benefits to regular facials – Clearer skin is a natural result of professional exfoliation on a regular basis, and smoother, moist, and more youthful-looking skin is a result of the facial massage and products that are included in professional facial treatments. As you keep regular facial appointments with your Esthetician, she will learn the cyclical changes that occur with your skin and will adjust and suggest the correct products for you to use at home.

Q: What products do you use?

A: I use both Skin Fitness and Farmaesthetics, professional-only product lines that are created using ONLY the finest pure & natural ingredients, harvested in a responsible & sustainable way, cruelty-free, and are NOT tested on animals!

It is also important to me that any products I use do NOT contain:

  • animal ingredients
  • fillers, or synthetic pore-clogging ingredients
  • carcinogenic pesticides or nasty chemical preservatives

I only use the BEST pure & natural professional products, to give you healthy, glowing skin!

Q: Why are natural skin care products so good for my skin?

A: Nature supplies all the ingredients your body needs to be beautiful, and natural ingredients closely mirror the body’s own chemistry, so they are gentle and effective, and work in harmony with your body rather than just sitting on the surface.

Q: What causes acne to flare up?

A: Acne outbreaks are caused by the four “trigger factors”: excess oil, pore-clogging dead skin cells, acne bacteria, and inflammation. Hormones prompt your oil glands to produce excess oil, provoking the skin cells in your pores to rapidly shed. When the pore becomes clogged by trapped oil and dead skin cells, it creates a perfect breeding ground for the irritating acne bacteria. As your skin’s immune system reacts to, and tries to deal with the bacteria, it becomes inflamed, eventually causing a full-blown breakout.

Q: I have Oily/Combination skin, do I really need to use a moisturizer?

A: Oily/Combination skin types need hydration just as much as other skin types-especially since people with oily skin often use harsh and drying washes in their home care routines, and spot treatments to alleviate the pain and inconvenience of unwanted blemishes. But, if you over-dry the skin, and do not moisturize it appropriately, your skin’s oil gland are then stimulated to produce even MORE oil, upsetting the natural lipid balance of the skin and making the problem even worse!!

Regular facials help to re-establish and maintain your skin’s natural moisture balance, and also exfoliate and deep clean your pores and remove comedones (blackheads), helping to stop the formation of blemishes before they even start.

Q: Do I really need to use an eye cream? Can’t my facial moisturizer work under and around my eyes just as well?

A: All moisturizers can be used around the eyes. However, the skin around the eye area is a lot different than the rest of the face. There are no oil glands, there, so skin tends to get dry and wrinkled if not cared for properly. Also the skin of the eye area is much thinner and can’t absorb heavier products with large lipid molecules. A separate eye cream should be used to address the specific problems around the eye such as fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles.

Q: I wear a lot of makeup on my face – why should I get facials?

A: Your makeup can only look as good as the skin that’s underneath it – the tone, texture, pores, and lipid balance all affect how smoothly your makeup applies, and also how long it lasts. To have a healthy, glowing skin underneath your makeup, will make the finished result look smoother and more even, and you probably won’t have to wear as much makeup on your skin anymore, since you will have fewer blemishes and a more even skin tone.

Q: I have Oily/Combination Skin, with clogged pores - what type of facial do you recommend?

A: I recommend either the Alaskan Glacial Mud Facial, the Fruit Acid Salicylic Peel, or the Mint-Rosehip Aromatherapy Facial, with extractions. This will give your skin a nice fresh start, and after your facial series, you will notice your pores will look smaller, your skin will look smoother, and if you follow a proper homecare routine, your oily skin will re-balance itself and produce less oil.

Q: I have Normal Skin, with just a few clogged pores – what type of facial do you suggest?

A: I recommend either the Mint-Rosehip Aromatherapy Facial with extractions, or the Chocolate-Wasabi Facial. It will cleanse your pores, and stimulate your circulation to get your skin glowing!

Q: I have Dry Skin/Mature Skin that’s looking a little dull, and a few fine lines/wrinkles – what type of facial do you recommend?

A: I recommend the Repairing Energy Facial, and the Fruit-Acid Peel, followed by a series of the Hydrating Marine Collagen Facial as the next appointment. The Fruit Acid Peel is very effective, and reveals fresh, younger-looking skin after your first time!

The Hydrating Marine Collagen Facial will hydrate your skin from the inside out, and lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This facial also includes a special concentrated treatment for the eye area.

**Additional anti-aging concentrated ampoules are also available upon request, to add to your facial service, such as collagen (derived from plant sources), lifting/firming, oxygenating, and plant-derived phytohormones, to promotes younger-looking skin. **
